The MS-DOS is an operating system (OS) designed to be compatible with multiple computers and notably the IBM PC. Designed to be modular and adapt with multiple architectures in mind, its huge compatibility, speed of process and easy of use made it the dominant OS during the late 80s and the 90s until it got replaced by more powerful GUIs.
The well-known Windows OS is a successor, Windows 9x being a GUI-frontend while it still loads MS-DOS in the background. It eventually got discontinued in the 2000 when the Windows NT line became the default line of Windows OS.
