Sir Vernant is a Royal Knights captain and the non-playable character of Wizardry Variants Daphne.

Profile

A commander within the Royal Knights, he is something of a rebel. Although a nonconformist amongst the Knight^[sic], he is beloved by both friends and subordinates. While far from diligent, he has true skill, and the Knight Commander has taken a keen interest in him.

History

Beginning Abyss

Vernant and his Craftsmen are among the Royal Knight expedition sent out to rescue King Iver from the Beginning Abyss. When Elmon introduces a masked adventurer to the expedition, Vernant is initially suspicious, but reluctantly tolerates the adventurer's company after Dylanhardt allows him to join.

During the Beginning Abyss, Vernant observes several Gluttonous Maws preparing meat and stuffing heads of slain knights, noting their human-like worksmanship. He also witnesses the results of the Masked Adventurer reversing the Harken on the second floor, and begins to change his opinion towards the Adventurer.

However, shortly into the next floor, Vernant's damaged sabatons leave him unable to run when Helmut begins collapsing the ceiling on the knights, leading to him being crushed to death.

Beginning Abyss, Perfect Outcome

Once the Masked Adventurer turns back time with the Cursed Wheel after his first execution, he collects junk from B1F to repair a set of sabatons, which he hands to Vernant at B2F. While still suspicious, he changes into the new pair of sabatons; this allows him to evade the collapsing ceiling and survive. He then bears witness to the corpse trap on B4F, and once the Masked Adventurer tells them about the nature of the trap, Vernant and his Craftsmen check the trap by wafting sleeping draught over to the knight corpses, confirming that they are dead when they continue moving. Later on the floor, he orders Elmon's skirmishers to follow her to rescue Maurice.

When the expedition encounters Helmut, Vernant and the Craftsmen prepare a Draught of the Bull thanks to the Masked Adventurer collecting the final ingredient needed and administer it to the Defenders, giving them the strength to withstand Helmut's final cave-in trap with their shields. After Helmut's defeat, he celebrates along with the other knights, proposing a toast to the Masked Adventurer.

Port Town Grand Legion

If Vernant survives the Beginning Abyss and the Masked Adventurer sides with Princess Pulgritte, he joins Vernant to investigate the Port Town and look for Aegon the Wise. However, this also results in Vernant falling victim to the Curse of Amnesia, making the capital forget his existence. As a result, Dylanhardt and Elmon do not remember Vernant when he makes his report, and attempt to have him arrested; Vernant successfully resists arrest and returns to the Port Town after leaving a message for the Masked Adventurer at the Adventurers' Guild.
